The Economics of Pain

Wed Jul 8, 2009, 7:30 PM
There's probably many examples of industries involving human suffering as an integral element of their operation, but I would think the two most descriptive illustrations are: the trade & consumption of both conflict diamonds, and sex slavery.

There is much consternation about the agendas & forces that coalesce to drive the management of these trades. But this myopic focus only observes half of the fundamental problem; supply.

Demand is the other side of the same coin, and it must be addressed if we can ever hope to see that coin destroyed.

Gluttonous desire for unnecessary excess demands the retrieval of precious items like diamonds at such a rate that some will stoop to any lengths, no matter how great & bloody, to reap the rewards of suppling that massive demand.

Pornography & sexual liberation haven't evened out the asymmetry of sexual dominance between the genders, they have just driven men to hide the animality of their sexuality behind a smokescreen of politically correct attitudes. At the same time highly sexualised culture just panders to our dark desires, when in fact the selfishness of these desires should be denied & rebuked.

It is the perceived 'right' to that kind of desolating sexuality that gives rise to the demand for the sort of product that the sex slave industry is selling. And it should be remembered that all of us men are guilty of these sins, and consequently we all are guilty of this suffering.

We need to change these deficiencies in our culture. And culture starts with you; it starts with me.
Without the demand, the evil hearts of the suppliers will still go on beating, but at least they will have to find other ways to bring their evil fruits to bear.
It's an economic problem people. It needs an economic solution.
